Establishing a Brand

I suppose when you start these sort of things, people are sometimes looking for a mission statement or an outline–so they'll know what to expect:

I hope to express my opinions and thoughts in regards to art and design within sports–specifically uniforms and logos. As any avid fan knows everyone has their respective loyalties; and whether it be to these Hawks or these Hawks, I'm hoping to keep this site from becoming yet another shouting match about sports. I want to provide commentary and hopefully some insight to those interested in the look of their teams as much as their performance.

While I am certainly not naive about just how few people will read this to start,  as the site (and hopefully readership grows) I will try to add some features, and keep updates frequent and regular. You can expect to see alterations and changes in typography and graphics to this blog as I try to land on a satisfying end-result.

In the meantime, I encourage you to check out Paul Lukas' blog, Uniwatch and Chris Creamer's sportslogos.net. These are two terrific resources for someone interested in sports uniforms and logos.

As this is the inaugural entry, I'd end on something I hope to feature each post:

Logo/Uniform Matchup of the Day:
What this feature will hopefully highlight is the best visual matchup for the day, regardless of sport.

We'll visit the Stanley Cup playoffs with the Detroit Red Wings at the San Jose Sharks. It's 'old' versus 'new' on so many levels with this matchup–Detroit has one of most recognizable and classic uniforms in sports: simple, bold and timeless. Meanwhile San Jose seems to kind embody the 'new NHL.' The Sharks have great team colors, and with the heavy black and aggressive logo, they almost seem like Team Iceland from Mighty Ducks 2. Even with a more modern style, the stripes and trim give the overall look of their sweaters an unmistakably traditional feel, that fits right in with the landscape of a sport rooted in history.

On one final note, I wholeheartedly encourage comments, criticisms and corrections–while this site will pale in comparison to many others discussing this topic–I want this to be the best it can be.
